God loves all of us and God gave us the gift to learn and wonder. Let's get ready for our story by taking a nice deep breath to prepare ourselves. As we continue this story of preparing the way for Jesus, we want to share how God prepared the hearts in the way before Jesus. The story of the Jesse Tree traces the family tree of Jesus. A family is a group of people who love each other and are connected to each other. Advent is a time when we prepare our hearts to welcome Jesus. This is also a time to understand the story of who and what came before Jesus. God has prepared a journey for the people of God. Let's begin so we can understand why we should understand the family tree of Jesus. Now we might be wondering, why do we need to begin at the beginning? Well, in order for us to know the birth of Jesus, we also need to wonder and understand about the birth of our world. God made the world and the stories of the Old Testament to help us understand where the family tree of Jesus begins. This is the place where we begin to understand the power of God's covenants with God's people. Remember, a covenant is a promise. Remember that Jesus was also a child and he was educated and he also learned about the history in the Old Testament too. He knew about the story of Noah. Our reading today on day four will be from Genesis 6 and 7 and 8. And at the end, we will go to Genesis 9, where we hear about the first prophecy and connection to God. The story of Noah is a symbol of how God is forgiving. The human world became so sinful and full of evil, and it made God very sad and brokenhearted that his people had made such poor choices. Through Noah, God made a promise to humans that never again would he destroy earthly life. Genesis 6 is titled The Wickedness and Judgment of Man. Verse 5 begins and describes the world and introduces us to Noah. The Lord God said, The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. This really means that people were continually evil. Most people. And the Lord was sorry he had made man on earth. He was very grieved. He was very sad. So the Lord said, I will destroy man who I have created. I am sorry I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Noah walked with God, and Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Jeff. Noah was perfect. We should know that the earth was evil before God. The earth was filled with violence. God said to Noah, make yourself an ark of gopherwood. Make rooms in the ark and cover it inside and out with pitch. This is kind of like the tar on a road. It is very sticky, and it helped create an ark that would not leak. God described and detailed how Noah needed to make this ark. God told Noah, I am bringing a flood to the earth to destroy everything on earth. But I will make a covenant. Remember again, a covenant is a promise. God promised that he would save Noah, his family, and two of every animal of every kind that Noah brought into the ark. And Noah followed God. Noah did this, he built the ark, he brought his family, he welcomed the animals. Then God brought the flood. It rained for forty days and nights. Indeed it was true, the flood was on the earth forty days and nights. God remembered Noah, and he saved him and his family from the flood in the ark. They were safe with the animals in the ark. Then God made wind to pass over the earth and begin to try it, and the rain stopped. After many more days God sent out a raven, and then a dove to find land. After a couple of attempts, the dove came back with an olive branch. This meant to Noah that there were growing plants nearby. Eventually Noah sent the dove to find land, and the dove did not return. The dove had found a home where there were more plants. God made a covenant with creation and with Noah, and God said in his heart, I will make a promise with you and your descendants after you. Never will living things be cut off from the earth. Never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth. As Noah's family began to prosper, God was still with them. Through Noah, Shem was blessed with a connection with God. In Genesis chapter 9, verse 26, it is the first prophecy about the coming Messiah. It says, And Noah awoke and said, Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem, and may Canaan be his servant. God was with Shem. How does this connect to Jesus and the Jesse tree that we're talking about? Well, we should wonder about Jesus and his family tree. Kingdoms and nations came from and descended from Noah and his sons. Jesus is descended from Noah and his son Shem through Abraham. It is very important for us to trace the family tree of Jesus back to God's covenant with Noah. God already had a plan when he saved Noah. Noah, a just and perfect patriarch, is a very important part of understanding and being patient for the coming of Jesus. God was patient when he sent the rain. God sent Jesus to be the one who would be able to share God's covenant of love and salvation with people. After Noah, we will continue to witness and share the stories of the people of God as we journey to the Nativity. We want to make sure that we remember where Jesus came from and the promises of God to his people as they journey towards the nativity. Through this scripture and story, we learn how God created the world and how God began giving covenants to the people who were close to him. We will continue to hear of good things and mistakes, just like in the story of Noah, and about the journeys of the people of God, always knowing that God forgives through love. When you are sharing about the birth of Jesus and his resurrection, you are sharing the good news of Jesus to the ends of the earth. We continue to share and witness about Jesus. We pray that through our stories you can also wonder, extend your knowledge, and learn about the love of God. Continuing listening every day to hear about the family tree of Jesus, right up until Christmas Day. Thank you for wondering and listening to Bible Stories and Wonder. We look forward to our next stories with you.
